Fire officials predict that the year's coldest weather is on its way and issued tips to prepare for extreme temperature changes:
Heating equipment should be serviced and inspected annually.
Electric space heaters should be tested and certified by an independent testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratory. Keep heaters at least 36 inches from other objects and pedestrian traffic areas. Make sure they have automatic shut-off switches, and avoid using extension cords.
Fireplaces and wood stoves should be cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified chimney sweep. Always use an appropriately installed fire screen and never leave a fire unattended.
Use extreme caution with a portable kerosene heater. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, refuel outside and never attempt to refuel or move a hot unit.
Prevent water pipes from freezing by allowing water in sinks and tubs to ``trickle. Never thaw a frozen pipe with a torch or dryer, which can cause a house fire.
