Cornelius Richard (Rick) Gambrell Jr., of the 1300 block of Coltrane Court, departed this life Jan. 21, 1997.
Rick was a native of Union, S.C., and the son of the late Elwillie and Richard Gambrell Sr. Rick entered military service in 1942 and was a veteran of three wars, World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He concluded his distinguished military career after 22 years of service. Rick was subsequently employed by the Virginia Employment Commission where he worked with the STOP Organization and later with the Internal Revenue Service. In 1983, Rick retired for the second time after 13 years of dedicated service.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Josephine Gambrell; a very dear sister-in-law, Helen Cotton; a niece, Cardrienne Peebles; cousins-in-law, Warren S. Harris, all of Portsmouth, Ellis E. Harris of Washington, D.C.; and other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in New Bethel Baptist Church, 1412 Greenwood Drive, Portsmouth, by the Rev. James M. Whitaker. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will be at home, 1304 Coltrane Court, Portsmouth.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Sentara Home Care and Hospice Services, Koger Executive Center, Suite 201, Norfolk, Va. 23502, in the name of the deceased. Fisher Funeral Home is handling arrangements. ILLUSTRATION: Personal Photo
