FRANCIS J. DUNLAP

Francis ``Frank'' Joseph Dunlap, 56, of Virginia Beach and longtime resident of Rockville Centre, N.Y., died Tuesday Jan. 21, 1997.

Born on June 28, 1940, in New Brunswick, N.J., Frank was the third of four sons born to Jane R. and Edward F. Dunlap. Upon graduating from St. Peter's High School in New Brunswick in 1958, Dunlap pursued his father's vocation in engineering by enrolling in the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. Dunlap distinguished himself as the quarterback of the football team by receiving numerous All-East Honorable Mention awards prior to graduating in 1962 with a bachelor's of science degree in marine engineering. Mr. Dunlap served as the engineering officer on the NS Savannah, the world's only nuclear powered merchant vessel, which is now a museum in Charleston, S.C. He was a partner in Marine Equipment and Services and president of Jetblast Co. before starting his own company, Dunlap Marine Services.

Frank was a natural athlete, avid golfer and expert skier. He was a member of the Rockville Links Country Club and a Ski Resort homeowner in Okemo Mountain, Vt. He taught his children many sports and donated his time and talents to coaching Little League.

Frank is survived by his wife, Susan Gale Knight Dunlap; his children, Francis J. Dunlap Jr., Matthew J. Dunlap, Christine M. Dunlap; his brothers, Edward F. Dunlap of Tulsa, Okla., Thomas J. Dunlap and wife, Nancy and their children, Amy and Jennifer.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Altmeyer Funeral Home by the Rev. Dick Keever. Burial will follow services in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association, 300 Steamboat Road, Kings Point, N.Y. 11024 or to your favorite charity.
