Preservation North Carolina has acquired for restoration the historic 1838 Gen. Jonathan Hill Jacocks House on New Hope Road in the Durant's Neck section of Perquimans County.
The Jacocks house is one of the largest homes in Perquimans County; it was given to Preservation North Carolina by its most recent owners, Mr. and Mrs. James M. Hofler and Mrs. Bernard Hofler of Sunbury. The Hoflers acquired the Jacocks property and 1.75 acres of surrounding land in 1954.
``You really can't put a value on an acquisition like this,'' said Peter Rascoe, manager of the newly established Edenton Regional Office of Preservation North Carolina in Edenton.
``The Jacocks House is important to the heritage of North Carolina,'' Rascoe said, ``And the generous gift of the Jacocks House by the Hoflers assures us that one of the most historic properties in the area will be saved.''
General Jacocks was a militia officer, legislator and civic leader in the early colonial years of the last century.
The house is designed around an ``unusually deep'' two-story ell and contains unique interior features, including a monkey-paw design on the newel post for the stairs.
