A GROUP OF local Filipino-American youths has banded together to stage a dance tonight to raise money for a cause in which they all believe.
The casual dance, open to people ages 13 to 21, will benefit Operation Smile. Hip-hop and dance tunes will be provided by two disc jockeys. There will also be security and a concession stand.
The theme of the dance is ``United by a Smile.''
Impetus for planning the dance began a few months ago when Ted Martinez, a junior at Kempsville High School, decided to bring together local Filipino-American youth clubs to form one large council. The Filipino Youth Council now includes officers of seven local youth clubs: the Filipino Heritage Club of Kempsville High, Tidewater Filipino Youth Club, Filipino American Cultural Society of Salem High, United Ilocano Youth Association of Tidewater, Jobies and Demolay service organizations and Tidewater Area Baguio Youth.
Operation Smile is a non-profit, volunteer medical services organization providing free reconstructive surgery to children in developing countries and in the United States. The Filipino Youth Council will raise money for a Philippines mission, where a surgical team will operate on youths with deformities. ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
