WALTER D. STEWART

Walter Dunbar ``Chink'' Stewart, of the 2700 block of W. Garrison Ave., departed this life on Tuesday Jan. 21, 1997, in Baltimore, Md.

He was the son of the late Harrison Stewart Sr. and Pecola Stewart. He was predeceased by his wife, Alma Stewart.

He was educated in the Norfolk Public Schools and attended Virginia Union University, Richmond. At the age of 16, he became an assistant golf pro. He later pursued a career as a professional golfer and instructor in Norfolk as a civilian and in the U.S. Navy. Relocating to Baltimore, Md., in the early 1950s he became the manager and golf instructor at Carroll Park Golf Course, where he later retired.

Left to cherish his memories are his daughter, Gloria Stewart of Virginia Beach; a sister, Marie Breckenridge of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Anita Barnes of Oakland, Calif., Edward Barnes of Queens, N.Y.; nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends and assemble at 6208 Amherst Circle, Virginia Beach. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Graves Funeral Home chapel, Norfolk, by the Rev. Anthony Moses. Burial will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. ILLUSTRATION: Personal photo
