BLUES BAND LIKES TO PLAY BOOGIE MUSIC

Blues addicts needing a fix can get one with Outer Banks trio Kinda Blue, featuring guitarist and singer Dale Cates, drummer Scott Lawrence and bass player Tom Stevenson.

``The blues are simple, but not simple,'' says 30-year-old Cates, the group's leader. ``It has layers.''

Cates, whose parents are both deaf, taught himself to play guitar 16 years ago.

``I always liked music,'' he says. ``But the blues grabbed me. That music seems to come from the heart.''

A lifelong resident of the Outer Banks, Cates hooked up with Stevenson and Lawrence about 18 months ago. Before that, he and Lawrence played in the alternative-leaning bands Triggerfish and Exhale.

Cates is now a part-time Outer Banks resident. During the week, he's a sign language interpreter for Hampton, Va., city schools.

Kinda Blue, which takes its name from the title of Miles Davis' classic album, has a song list of about 50 songs - including five originals.

``We do boogie-type stuff,'' Cates says. ``Nobody I can compare it to, really. We do some Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, that kind of stuff.''

Cates, who can flat-out blister a guitar, says his band makes sure the audience has a good time.

``Most of what we play is upbeat and funky,'' he says. ``But occasionally we throw in something like `Wild Thing.' '' ILLUSTRATION: Photo
