George Mitchell ``Deacon'' Winston Jr., 87, of the 2900 block of Myrtle Ave., died Jan. 23, 1997.

A shopkeeper at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Mr. Winston retired more than 20 years ago after more than 20 years service. He was a Norfolk native and a member of First Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, and Usher Board No. 1, Men's Bible Club, 'til death chairman of Deacon's Board, Mary D. Long Missionary Circle and Prayer Band. He was a member of International Longshoreman Association 1248, NAACP. He was also a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include three daughters, Lettie Westray of Norfolk; stepdaughter, Gloria Ingram of Thomasville, N.C.; foster daughter, Joan Willis of Norfolk; three sons, Anthony Westray, Michael Westray of Norfolk; foster son, George Lowery of Washington, D.C.; six sisters, Harriet Howell, Georgia Walker, Mable McNeal, Annie Miller, all of Norfolk, Rosetta Bonner, Mary Mitchell of Windsor, N.C.; brother-in-law, Harry Howell of Norfolk; eight grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Lettie Askew Winston and George Winston Sr.

A funeral service will be conducted at noon Tuesday in First Calvary Baptist Church by Dr. Johnny L. White. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Hale Funeral Home is in charge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Calvary Baptist Church Elevator Fund, 813 Henry St., Norfolk. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The family will receive friends at 640 Henry St., where they will also assemble at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
