Nathaniel Smith died Jan. 22, 1997, in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Hampton.
A native of Southampton County, Mr. Smith was a self-employed painter and a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church, Newsoms. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of American Legion Post No. 183, Franklin.
Survivors include his wife, Jessie M. Smith; five daughters, Clementine Turner of Newport News, Ann Cooper, Beverly Smith, Joyce Ann Pinder of Wilmington, Del., and Chiquita Lee of Franklin; four sisters, Lessie Pope of Franklin, Virginia Porter of Boykins, Lucille Smith of Norfolk and Maude DeBerry of Bealeton, Va.; brother, Alphonzo Smith of Newsoms; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Monday in Mount Tabor Baptist Church by the Rev. R.S. Steele. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery. The family will assemble in Wm. M. Johnson and Sons Inc. for the procession to the church.
