S. Barron Segar Sr. died peacefully Saturday in his home on North Shore Road in Norfolk a few days before his 92nd birthday.
A native of Warsaw, Va., he was the son of Dr. H. L. Segar and Agnes Barron Segar. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Katharine Baird Segar of Norfolk; two sons, Samuel Barron Segar Jr. of Norfolk and Edward Baird Segar of Memphis, Tenn.; his daughter, Katharine Segar Lawless of Norfolk; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He attended Warsaw High School, St. Christopher's School in Richmond, and Virginia Military Institute. He moved to Norfolk in 1926 and was in the shipping business for two years. He entered the real estate business in 1929 and spent the rest of his business life in that field. He was president of Goodman Segar Hogan and its affiliate corporations for 32 years. During his long business career, he helped shape and participated in much of the growth in the Hampton Roads area. When he retired, Goodman Segar Hogan was the largest real estate brokerage firm in the state. He served as President of the Norfolk Real Estate Board and was selected ``Realtor of the Year'' in 1940. He was a trustee of the Norfolk Academy for 32 years, an active supporter of Virginia Military Institute, a Director of the Norfolk General Hospital for approximately 35 years and spent much of his business life involved with various community activities. He was honored for his dedicated service by both Norfolk Academy and Virginia Military Institute. He was a devoted Episcopalian all of his life and served twice as Senior Warden of the Church of the Good Shepherd. He was a member of Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church at the time of his death. Quail hunting was a passion to him from his boyhood and throughout his entire adult life, and he approached it with energy and enthusiasm just as he did in all of his endeavors.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1997, at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Norfolk by the Rev. James Sell. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of donor's choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Norfolk Chapel is handling arrangements.
