GEORGE B. THOMAS

George Bryson ``Jack'' Thomas died Jan. 25, 1997, at home.

Born July 11, 1904, in what was then Riverside, Norfolk County, Va., he was the son of George Bryson Thomas and Ida Doyle Thomas. He grew up in Panama and in Lynnhaven, Va., walking two miles to school each day and working in a brickyard for 25 cents a day in the summers from the time he was 9 years old.

He graduated from Fork Union Military Academy in 1921 and attended the University of Richmond. He retired in 1972 from Westmoreland Coal Co., having begun his employment 46 years previously with the Smokeless Fuel Co. He was shipping agent for coal companies in Norfolk and had friends among ship captains from many nations. After a lifetime spent in Tidewater, he moved to his son's home in Albemarle County in 1991.

Mr. Thomas is mourned by his wife of 63 years, Catherine McPherson Thomas; daughter, Anne T. Thomas; son, George B. Thomas Jr.; daughter-in-law, Sally Thomas; son-in-law, Ron McCoy; grandchildren, Alison Hall, John Hall, David Hall, Laura Thomas, Nancy Thomas; two great-granddaughters, Alexandra and Katherine; and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Monticello Memory Gardens. Hill and Wood Funeral Home, Charlottesville, is handling arrangements.
