INTRUDER, CHASED AWAY, RETURNS SHOOTING

When Thomas R. Leggett answered the knock on his door after 8 p.m. Saturday, a man asked him if he wanted to buy a puppy. The man said he had talked earlier to a woman at the home.

Leggett, 28, who lives in the 200 block of Clay St., replied that he didn't know anything about a dog and told the man to return later.

The stranger forced his way past Leggett, who went into another room, got a

The man fled but returned within 15 minutes, said Detective Joyce L. Williams. This time he looked through the window, saw Leggett's neighbor, Samuel D. Carmack, 40, in the living room, and fired a small-caliber handgun three or four times through the window, Williams said.

The shots missed Carmack, Leggett and a 3-year-old child, the daughter of a woman who shares the house with Leggett. The girl's mother was visiting a friend.

The man fired several more shots toward the house as he fled, Williams said.

A witness, who was not in the house, described the shooter.

Within hours, police arrested William T. Boone, 22, at his home in the 1200 block of Bethlehem St. in the north Jericho neighborhood.

While at the house, officers recovered a handgun they say may have been used in the shooting, as well as a sawed-off shotgun.

Boone was charged with residential breaking and entering with intent to commit assault with a deadly weapon, three counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling, attempted malicious wounding, two counts of using a firearm in a felony and possession of a sawed-off shotgun.

He was released Sunday from Western Tidewater Regional Jail after posting bail.

Williams said the intruder did not have a puppy with him when he was at Leggett's house, and police did not find one at Boone's home.
