A 27-year-old man was electrocuted and a 24-year-old man seriously injured shortly before noon Monday when a ladder they were moving hit a high tension wire near Westover Avenue and Weyanoke Street in West Ghent, a fire spokesman said.
The two men, whose identities were not released Monday, had been painting a nearby house, said Jack Goldhorn, spokesman for Norfolk fire and paramedical services.
When paramedics arrived at 11:58 a.m., they found the two men lying in the street, Goldhorn said.
One man was in full cardiac arrest. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other man suffered second degree burns of his right hand and had exit wounds from the electrical current on both feet.
He was in serious but stable condition Monday evening.
Residents told officials they heard a loud boom about 11:50 a.m., then their power went out. The outage lasted at least a half-hour. ILLUSTRATION: The Virginian-Pilot
