MADELEINE H. WRIGHT

Madeleine Hayes Wright, 93, of the 1500 block of Spratley St., died Jan. 28, 1997, in her residence.

A secretary to director of the management engineering department at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Mrs. Wright retired after 27 1/2 years of service. She was a native of Rockingham County, Va., and the widow of H.A. Wright. She was also a member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church, past president of the West Park View Garden Club and lifetime member of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, past member of the Women of the Moose organization. She served as president, past president, chairman and co-chairman of numerous benevolent, charitable, civic and fraternal organizations.

Survivors include her four daughters, Mary Thompson and her husband, Gilbert of Berlin, Md., Gloria VanPortfleit and her husband, Homer, of Grand Rapids, Mich., Joan Rosekrans and her husband, Robert, of Chesapeake, Grace Thomas of Ogdensburg, N.Y.; son, Walter Hayes Jr. of Portsmouth; brother, Jacob Miller and his wife, Annabelle of Seaport, Va.; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by Dr. Charles Peterson. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at 1519 Spratley St., Portsmouth, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
