FIRST SUNDAY OFFERS A MENU OF LECTURES AND LOCAL ART EXHIBITS

The work of black artists who confront issues of culture and race will be discussed by Steve Carpenter, Old Dominion University art education program director, at the Portsmouth Community Arts Center Sunday.

The free 2 p.m. lecture is part of the First Sunday in Portsmouth activities scheduled each month at Olde Towne galleries and antique shops.

The arts center is featuring an exhibit of works by Barbara Watson, a graduate student in the Norfolk State University/ODU art program. Her works are airbrushed acrylic on canvas and paper, and emphasize the natural patterns found in trees.

Watson, a resident of Chesapeake, is a four-time recipient of the NSU graduate fellowship and recently was invited to give a slide show and lecture on her work at the San Francisco Art Institute's National Black Student Conference.

Opening at the Olde Towne Gallery on Sunday will be an exhibition of Oriental brush painting by Nancy Cockman, a native of Hong Kong who now lives in Portsmouth.

Cockman received degrees from the International Art School and the University of Hong Kong, and was featured in a one-person show in Hong Kong in early 1996. She also has participated in the Stockley Gardens art show in Norfolk.

The public is invited to a reception for Cockman at Olde Towne Gallery from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Art Atrium Gallery II will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. An exhibit of watercolors and prints by the late Thomas C. ``Shane'' Green of Portsmouth will be shown in one section of the gallery.

A second show will feature the winners in the National Poster Art Competition sponsored by The Links Inc. It was open to all elementary school children in Hampton Roads. The winning entries from the region will be displayed.
