A man whose body was found in a wooded area of the Tidewater Community College campus Thursday has been identified as Paul G. Schachner Jr. of Norfolk.
Police said Schachner, 56, died Wednesday night or early Thursday at the remote site at the edge of the campus off College Drive. The results of an autopsy have not been released, but police spokesman Mike Simpkins said Schachner likely died as a result of a severe beating.
A passerby, possibly a jogger, discovered the body about noon Thursday 20 feet off a path behind the classroom building on the Portsmouth Campus, which is in northern Suffolk.
Police released few details of the killing.
A man who answered the phone at Schachner's apartment in the 100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue on Friday afternoon said he was an acquaintance but declined to give his name. He said Schachner did not have any relatives in the area.
Bonnie Billue, former president of the now defunct Wynnewood Civic League near the college, said she and her neighbors were concerned about crime but felt the killing was unrelated to TCC or the neighborhood.
She was attending a French class on the campus when police were recovering the body but knew nothing about the incident until Friday morning.
The path is a popular walking and jogging trail and fishing spot, she said.
Nancy Norris, an employee at the nearby Joint Training Analysis and Simulation Center who also lives in the area, said center employees were notified Thursday afternoon in an e-mail message that the body had been found.
