Police are waiting for the results of an autopsy before proceeding with their investigation into the death of a newborn whose body was found Friday afternoon.
The infant, who appeared to be nearly full-term, was discovered nine hours after a woman who was living at the same address where the baby was found had collapsed and was hospitalized. No one knew the baby was there when the woman collapsed, however.
Police said a woman who was renting a room at a home in the 1100 block of Jackson St. collapsed at about 7:30 a.m. She was taken to Virginia Beach General Hospital.
By Friday afternoon, it was determined that she had recently given birth.
Police were called and went to the residence where they found the baby at 4:30 p.m. The body was sent to the State Medical Examiner's office in Norfolk for an autopsy.
If the child was born alive, charges could be lodged against the mother, police said. They wouldn't release other details about how the baby was found.
