Tarmac America Inc.'s ready-mix truck drivers voted Friday night to approve a one-year union contract that gives them a 30-cent an hour raise, said David Vinson, president of Teamsters Local 822.
The contract covers about 50 drivers based in Norfolk and another 50 based in the Richmond area. During separate balloting Friday night, they approved the contract with a total vote of 41-28.
While the local tally rejected the contract, the Richmond vote won the approval.
The union did not get the contract it wanted, but the drivers apparently took seriously Tarmac's statements that this agreement was its final offer. Ed Pittman, vice president of human resources for Tarmac, had said earlier the company would ``go on with our business.''
