One 14-year-old was seriously injured at Kempsville Middle School and another has been arrested and charged with assault, police said.
The incident occurred about 7 a.m. Friday in the cafeteria of the school in the 800 block of Churchill Drive, police said. What occurred wasn't clear Friday night, however.
``At this time, it is unclear exactly why the victim was assaulted,'' said Lou Thurston, a police spokesman.
Paramedics were first called to the school on a report of a student being found unconscious. When they arrived, they found that Justin Lee Grubbs of the 600 block of Benbough Drive had suffered head and other injuries.
Police were called in and arrested another boy, whose name was being withheld because of his age.
He was charged with malicious assault and released to his parents.
Grubbs was initially taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and was later transferred to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, where he was listed in serious condition Friday night.
