S. James Hines, 74, known as James Hines, of the 1500 block of Whaleyville Blvd., died Jan. 31, 1997, in Obici Hospital.
A native of Suffolk, he was a retired sheet metal mechanic for Birdsong Peanut Co. He was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church, Suffolk, participating as a member of the deacon board, laymen's fellowship and Taylor Progressive Class. He was a member of Bethlehem Ruritan Club with 36 years perfect attendance, a 50-year member of Knights of Pythias and also the Bethlehem Senior Citizens Fellowship Club.
Survivors include his wife, Iola Sparrow Hines; a daughter, Debra Sue Hines of Winston-Salem, N.C.; parents, Bessie Lilly Hines and Sidney Lewis Hines; two brothers, S.L. Hines of Suffolk, Jesse Lee Hines of Chesapeake; and grand-dog, ``Trudy.''
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Bethlehem Christian Church, Suffolk, by the Rev. David Wilson with burial in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday in Harrell Funeral Home and at other times in the residence. Memorials may be made to the Bethlehem Christian Church Building Fund, 1549 Holland Road, Suffolk, Va. 23434.
