The two presumptive candidates for governor this fall -- Lt. Gov.
Donald S. Beyer Jr., a Democrat; and Atty. Gen. James S. Gilmore
III, a Republican -- are off to a record-breaking start in
fund-raising.
Northern Virginia developers and businessmen, traditionally a
mainstay source of cash for Republicans, donated generously to Beyer
last year. His largest contribution was $76,700 from the
pro-business Northern Virginia PAC.
Gilmore has relied heavily on national, state and local
Republican organizations for his early fund raising.
Beyer, in a recent interview, said it's too early in the year to
identify deep trends in fundraising. "The bottom line is that money
won't be a problem," he said. "I expect Jim Gilmore and I will have
enough to run credible campaigns."
