TWO WRESTLERS FROM AREA TAKE WINNING WAYS TO TECH

LOCAL COLLEGE REPORT

South Hampton Roads wrestling continues to shine in the state college ranks. A pair of former local grapplers have etched their names in the Virginia Tech record books for most wins in a season.

Granby graduate Chis Martin, a freshman 150-pounder for the Hokies, has posted a 21-5 record and was named the Virginia Tech athlete of the week following victories over Virginia and VMI.

Martin, a VHSL Group AAA state champion at 145 pounds last year, defeated Jim Harshaw of UVa. - a state collegiate champion this winter - by 7-4 and then beat Jason Foresman of VMI - a former high school state champion from Cox - 6-4.

Mike Mercado, the 1996 state champ at 112 from Tallwood, has moved up to the 118-pound division and is 197-7.

Other former Southeastern District wrestlers are also seeing mat time for the Hokies.

Ryan Baker and Chris Basnight share time in the 177-pound class. Baker, a state runner-up from Deep Creek, is 3-8 and Basnight, a Great Bridge alumni, is 2-9.

OLD DOMINION TIDBITS: Several Monarch swimmers have posted CAA bests this season. Sophomore Mary Kay Bolduc, who was named the conference's tournament MVP and Rookie of the Year in 1996, is 6-0 in the 1000 freestyle and 8-1 in the 500 freestyle. She has topped the league in the 200 freestyle (1:53.55), the 500 freestyle (4:58.18) and the 200 backstroke (2:08.30). Junior Matt Craven notched a 21:36 finish in the 50 freestyle and a 46.09 in the 100 freestyle. Freshman Jimmy Sullivan is atop the CAA in the 1000 freestyle (9:33.05), the 500 freestyle (4:34.27) and the 400 individual medley (4:09.68). The league swimming championships will be held Feb. 19-22 in Charlotte, NC. . . . Area standouts have helped the Old Dominion wrestling squad notch a 4-2 overall record. Great Bridge grad Jamie Kelly won 19-5 and 6-0 in dual matches in the 167-pound division. Sophomore Shane Dannell, another Great Bridge alum, ranks first in the CAA's 134-pound class with an 11-5 record. Freshman Joel Jimenez, a former Lake Taylor standout, is in second in the conference's 126-pound division with an 8-6 overall record and a 4-1 dual record. ODU returns to action at home on Feb. 8 when it hosts James Madison.

MARLINS UPDATE: The women's basketball team capitalized on home court advantage last week and came away with three big wins over conference rivals Lynchburg, Randolph-Macon Woman's College and Hollins College.

The Marlins - after shooting a dismal 33 percent from the field which left them down 34-23 at the half - found their range for a 20-25 performance in the second and a 77-63 win. LeeAnna Lillefloren (Green Run) led the rally with 26 points and nine rebounds. Samantha Green (Catholic) chipped in 17 points and six boards. Amy Shindle, who had eight assists, and Nancy Mattox added 14 points apiece. Shindle, a senior, dumped in 26 points and six assists three nights later as Virginia Wesleyan blasted Randolph-Macon Woman's College 75-64. Lillefloren, who is second in ODAC scoring (19.7 ppg) continued her offensive run with 21 points and 10 rebounds. She again topped the Malins scoring against Hollins with 23 points while Green, her partner in the paint, added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Shindle chipped in 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists. . . . The men's team faced three of the top ranked squads in their respective regions last week and came away with a 1-2 record.

Against Salisbury State - currently ranked No. 2 among Division III schools in the NCAA pool - Tim Petrillo dumped in 26 points and was 7-of-9 from 3-point range as the Marlins fell 89-87. Percy Slight, an Indian River graduate, added 16 points and eight rebounds.

Wednesday's 72-63 victory at Hampden-Sydney was coach Terry Butterfield's first in eight seasons at Kirby Gymnasium.

ALUMNI REPORT: Megan Reese (Kempsville) helped the Mary Washington swim team improve to 8-1 in dual meets with her 2:14.24 time in the individual medley and 2:13.96 in the 200 backstroke. She also took first with the 400 freestyle relay team, which posted a 3:43.61. . . . The Mary Washington womens basketball team downed Goucher 60-37 last week behing Ashley Seekford's (Churchland) 12 points last week. In a 90-76 loss to Salisbury State, Seekford pulled down 10 rebounds. The Lady Eagles are 4-8 overall and 2-4 in the CAC. . Salem star Misty Colebank came off the bench for 15 points as James Madison topped William and Mary 76-59 in a CAA matchup. Colebank is averaging 6.4 points and 2.7 assists per game. She recorded a collegiate career high in the Dukes season opener on November 22 - her only start of the season - with 18 points and 6 assists. . . . Charles Kubic (Cox), placed fifth in the pole vault in the Covert Classic (14 feet, 3 1/4 inches) and the Yale Invitational (14 feet, 1 1/4 inches) for Lehigh University.
