HELEN F. BENTON

Helen Farleigh Benton, 93, of the 4100 block of Arlington Place, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 1997, in the home of her nephew in Midlothian, Va.

A native of Portsmouth, she was the widow of Chester L. Benton. Mrs. Benton had retired from the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority. She was a founding member of West End United Methodist Church, past treasurer, and served four terms as president of the West End Senior Citizens. At the age of 88, she was the oldest participant from Portsmouth in the Senior Olympics. She participated in five Olympics and won three gold medals.

Survivors include a nephew, Floyd R. Farleigh and wife, Jane, of Midlothian.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday in West End United Methodist Church by the Rev. Elisha E. Jones and the Rev. James Harris. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. A reception will be at the church following burial.
