MURDER SUSPECT

A man has been arrested in the murder of 19-year-old Vareck S. Griffin, who was gunned down in a Kensington-area apartment in December.

Hurcus J. Williams III, 26, was arrested early Sunday. He was charged with capital murder, robbery and two counts of using a firearm in a felony.

Before his arrest, Williams ran away from officers and hid in the 600 block of W. 36th St., police said. But K-9 officer A.L. Roscoe reported that his dog, Tello, helped track down and capture the suspect. Williams suffered a minor dog bite on his shoulder, police said.

Vareck Griffin, 19, was shot in the 3700 block of Colley Ave. Dec. 1. He died at a hospital. Griffin, of the 7500 block of Rosefield Drive, had been a drum major and tuba player in the Norview High School marching band.

Williams, whose address is listed in court records as the 1000 block of W. 44th St., was charged with assault and battery in a second crime, in August.
