DOLLAR GOES A LONG WAY AT GROCERY STORES THIS WEEK

HARRIS TEETER'S ``dollar sale'' includes split chicken breast for $1 per pound, Stokely's canned vegetables, three for $1, three Banquet chicken or turkey pot pies for $1, three 6-ounce cans of Hungry Jack buttermilk biscuits for $1, 64 ounces of Harris Teeter orange juice for $1 or selected Pepperidge Farm layer cakes for $1.

Meat specials this week include boneless chuck roast for $1.28 a pound at Rack & Sack and assorted pork chops for $1.59 a pound at Farm Fresh. Farmer Jack has Tyson whole fryers at 59 cents a pound. At Be-Lo, family packages of rib-eye steaks are $3.99 a pound, value packages of fryer thighs or drumsticks are 99 cents a pound and 5 pounds or more of ground chuck is $1.59 a pound.

Farm Fresh is offering specials this week on store-brand items including three boxes of macaroni and cheese for 99 cents, three cans of peas or green beans for $1, and a 24-ounce bottle of pancake syrup for 99 cents.

In the produce section this week look for buys on Florida super sweet white corn, three for $1, and pints of strawberries for $1.28 at Farm Fresh. Rack & Sack has 20-pound bags of white potatoes for $1.67 and 3-pound bags of Washington red delicious apples for $1.17. Cut watermelon is 49 cents a pound and pineapples are $2.77 a pound at Farmer Jack.

Chinese New Year begins Friday and area grocers are stocked to help with the celebrations. Jicama, snow peas, sugar snaps, tofu, eggroll and won ton wrappers, bean sprouts, fortune cookies, kim chee, bok choy and Asian pears are plentiful for preparing festive dishes.

On the shelf

Green Giant has two new offerings in the frozen food section.

A 1955 creation, green bean casserole, features cut green beans and french-fried onions in a creamy mushroom sauce.

Vegetables Alfredo, is 97 percent fat free. It combines broccoli florets, carrots and peas in a creamy sauce.

Each 9-ounce package makes 2 1/2 ( 3/4-cup) servings. Both can be prepared on the stovetop or in the microwave.
