SHIP TOURS: Two Navy ships will host visitors from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The guided missile frigate Klakring will be open at the Norfolk Naval Station. Visitors should use Gate 2 at the north end of Hampton Boulevard. At the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base, the dock landing ship Ashland will be open. Enter through Gate 1 at Little Creek Road and Shore Drive. In addition, the destroyer Arthur W. Radford will be tied up at the Nauticus International Pier from Friday through next Wednesday.
ENVIRONMENTAL KUDOS: The Chief of Naval Operations has presented environmental awards to Hampton Roads individuals and commands for a variety of environmental and conservation-related good works. Winners in the Navywide competition were Duane Gielda, Norfolk Naval Base; Douglas Kirk, Oceana Naval Air Station; and Catherine Zielske, Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. Local commands selected are: Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base, the destroyer Arthur W. Radford, the carrier John C. Stennis and the amphibious assault ship Wasp.
KIDS' VALENTINE WEB: Creators of a personalized photo album on the Internet are offering families with new babies a chance to send photos to military spouses overseas in time for Valentine's Day. The free service, available on the Worldwide Web at http://www.my-kids.com, is aimed at service members whose babies were born after Nov. 30, 1996. Family members need to respond by Friday by sending photos, their service member's address and a release form. PRAYER BREAKFAST: Lee Corder, chaplain of the Washington Redskins since 1988 and field director for Young Life, will be guest speaker for Fort Monroe's National Prayer Breakfast observance at 6:30 a.m. Feb. 18 at the Fort Monroe Club. Navy Cmdr. Dan Cloyd relieves Cmdr. Stephen R. Vaughn as commanding officer of the ``World Famous Pukin' Dogs'' of Fighter Squadron 143 in ceremonies Friday at Oceana Naval Air Station. Cloyd has served as executive officer of the F-14 Tomcat squadron since November 1995. Vaughn is being reassigned to Atlantic Fleet Fighter Wing at Oceana.
Cmdr. Martin A. Drake relieved Cmdr. Benjamin H. Bankston Tuesday as commanding officer of the destroyer Thorn. Drake comes from the staff of the Atlantic Fleet commander-in-chief. Bankston is being reassigned to the 6th Fleet in Gaeta, Italy, as staff operations and planning officer.
