James Sherman Gary Sr. of the 400 block of Gary Ave. died Feb. 3, 1997.
Mr. Gary was a retired quality inspector supervisor with 34 years service at Oceana Naval Air Station and a retired waiter with 30 years service at Steinhilber's Thalia Acres Inn. He was a native of Gates, N.C., and a member of New Middle Swamp Baptist Church, Corapeake, N.C., and an affiliated member of Mount Zion A.M.E. Church, Virginia Beach. He was a deacon at New Middle Swamp Baptist Church, secretary of the Mount Zion Male Chorus and president of the Mount Zion Gospel Choir. He was a member of Oceana Masonic Lodge No. 69 P.H.A. and a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, the Rev. Vivian Cason Gary; two daughters, Valerie Gary Bell of Manassas, Va., and Darlene Gary of Virginia Beach; two sons, James Sherman Gary Jr. of Virginia Beach and Donald Bell Sr. of Manassas; sister, Julia G. Williams of Gates; three brothers, Mills D. Gary of Waterbury, Conn., Willie E. Gary of Newport News and George Havard Gary of Hampton; granddaughter, Chelsea Gary of Virginia Beach; four grandsons, Derrick Bell of Morgantown, W.Va., Donald Bell Jr., James Gary III and Justin Gary, all of Virginia Beach; aunt, Addie Britt of Waterbury; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Mount Zion A.M.E. Church, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Larry S. Hinton and the Rev. Claude M. Odom. Burial will be in Mount Zion A.M.E. Church Cemetery. Community Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is in charge. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
