W. Wickham Taylor, M.D., a retired ophthalmologist, died Feb. 5, 1997, in his home.
Dr. Taylor was born in Columbia, S.C., on Sept. 9, 1911. He attended Norfolk Academy and graduated from Woodberry Forest High School and the University of Virginia. He received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University's School of Medicine and his residency training at the Wilmer Institute. During World War II, he served three years overseas.
Dr. Taylor was a lifelong member of Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry and as senior warden. He was a past president of the Norfolk Academy of Medicine and served on the board of the Norfolk Academy for 21 years. In retirement, he was active in community and environmental affairs.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Joan Whitehead Taylor; his four children, Mary T. Mundy of Richmond, Wickham C. Taylor of New York City, Timothy C. Taylor and Susan T. Vislocky of Norfolk; his sister, Suzanne S. Taylor of Norfolk; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at noon Friday in Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church by the Rev. James H.W. Sell and the Rev. Irwin M. Lewis Jr.
Memorial contributions may be made to Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church or the Cape Henry Audubon Society. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, will be handling the arrangements.
