Miss Mildred A. Pate, 91, of Greenville, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997, at Berne Village Retirement Center.
A native of Craven County, she was the daughter of the late Clarence F. and Mollie Hughes Pate. She was predeceased by a brother, Clarence F. Pate Jr.; two sisters, Myrtle Pate Croom and Bertha Pate Jones; and a half-sister, Sallie P. Pajkowski.
She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Greenville, where she served as a deaconess, and president of the Greenville Church Women United.
A graduate of East Carolina Teachers College in 1941, and Peabody College in 1949, she taught in Craven County, Kenansville, Forsyth County, at Western Carolina University, East Carolina University and was also the primary education supervisor in Forsyth County. She retired as a supervisor of Gates County Schools in 1971.
She was a member of the Beta Alpha chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Greenville Business and Professional Women's Club. She served as president of the Greenville Classroom Teachers Association, The North Carolina Association for Childhood Education, the North Carolina Peabody Alumni Association, The Winston-Salem Soroptimist Club, the Northeastern District Association of Childhood Education and was chairman of the board of editors for the North Carolina Education Association.
Surviving are a niece, Maxine Croom Hill of Ahoskie; nephew, Hayden L. ``Buzzy'' Croom of New Bern; niece, Sandra Jones Livesay of Tarboro; and 24 grandchildren, great-grandnieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Spring Garden Baptist Church Cemetery, New Bern, with the Rev. Rick Bailey and Dr. Billy Hutchinson officiating. The family will be at the home of Hayden ``Buzzy'' Croom, 680 Spring Garden Road, New Bern. Cotten Funeral Home, New Bern, is in charge.
