WORKSHOP TO ADDRESS ADULT DAY CARE

When more than 100 seniors gathered for the city's first Senior Summit, held last February to address the needs of an aging population, several participants brought up the need for an adult day-care center.

``A lot of elderly live with their younger children who work,'' Cecile Daigneault, a registered nurse with the Portsmouth Health Department, told the group. ``And in order not to have their parents staying alone all day and worrying about them, an adult day-care center would certainly fill the bill.''

Within weeks, a committee was formed to determine the options for adult day care in Portsmouth. On Friday, the committee will hold a workshop from 9 a.m. to noon at the Portsmouth Senior Citizens Center, 305 High St.

The workshop is targeted toward churches interested in starting adult day-care programs, said committee chair Cindy L. Richardson, but other service organizations such as the Kiwanis or Sertoma are welcome. Organizers of the workshop will cover the necessary requirements and regulations in running an adult day-care program. They also will provide help prospective groups locate and tap into financial resources for operating such a service.

Committee members also are interested in getting feedback from Portsmouth residents who would use adult day-care services.

``I know that once we get the word out that this is what we're looking at, this thing is going to explode,'' Richardson said.
