MAN INDICTED ON 14 CHARGES IN BURGLARY, ASSAULT

A grand jury has returned a 14-count indictment against a man linked to a Virginia Beach burglary during which a mother and her 9-year-old daughter were sexually assaulted.

Police on Wednesday said Jason M. Sunday, 22, who is being held on unrelated charges in Miami, is charged with:

One count each of abduction, abduction with intent to defile, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, burglary while armed with intent to commit rape, and grand larceny.

Two counts each of using a gun while committing a felony, forcible sodomy, and object sexual penetration.

Three counts of aggravated sexual battery.

Sunday, who escaped New Year's Day from an Indiana jail, was arrested in Key West Jan. 15 when authorities traced a call made on a stolen cellular phone.

Police said Sunday was originally being held in Indiana in connection with the rape and attempted murder of a Kokomo, Ind., woman in December.

Sunday escaped with two other men, and they came to Hampton Roads, police said. Shortly after they arrived, police began investigating a spate of burglaries in a three-block section of Magic Hollow.

On Jan. 12, police believe, Sunday and one companion ransacked a Magic Hollow home, tied up the mother and daughter who lived there and repeatedly assaulted them. A fingerprint from the scene was later traced to Sunday.

Police in Florida also found a camera in Sunday's possession that is believed to have been stolen in Virginia Beach. When officers had the film in the camera processed, they found a picture of the girl who had been assaulted. Although he has been charged in Virginia Beach, it may be some time before Sunday is brought back to Virginia to stand trial because of the charges he faces in Florida and Indiana.
