BLACK HISTORY

Here are some activities scheduled in Virginia Beach this month.

Step Show - Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Central Library, 4100 Virginia Beach Blvd. Local students will perform rhythmic and intricate step patterns to music and give dramatic readings. Call 431-3071.

Don Roberts - Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Central Library, 4100 Virginia Beach Blvd. The local television anchor and author of ``Rap to Live By'' will give a lecture on his career. Call 431-3071.

Storytelling/dance - Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. at the Central Library, 4100 Virginia Beach Blvd. Featured is interactive storytelling with Dyland Pritchett and the Uhuru African-American Dance Ensemble. Call 431-3071.

AIDS/HIV presentation - Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Central Library, 4100 Virginia Beach Blvd. Local youth will perform songs, dance and dramatic readings on this topic.

Poster contest - Entries must be turned in by 7 p.m. today at the Princess Anne Recreation Center. Participants create a poster, at home or at the center, depicting the success of African-American leaders. Judging will be Monday. The winners will be on display through February. Call 426-0022.

Learn about Kwanza - Feb. 25 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the CARE Center, 420 Birdneck Circle. All ages. Reservations required by Feb. 18. Call 426-0022.

Soul food contest - Feb. 28 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Mount Olive Church, 310 N. Birdneck Road. For ages 13 and up. Reservations required by Feb. 14. There is a $5 entry fee. Call 426-0022.

Programs at the Francis Land House - Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. features a program by Edna Hendrix and Bertha Caffee; Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. will be gallery talks by Edna Hendrix focusing on the history of the African American churches in Princess Anne County; Feb. 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. Edna Hendrix will conduct tours of the exhibition titled ``African Americans of Princess Anne County.'' Also copies of her book ``Black History (OUR HERITAGE) Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach,'' should be will be available for purchase.

The house is at 3333 Virginia Beach Blvd. Admission is $3 for adults, $2.50 for senior citizens, $1.50 for students and $1 for children. The hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Call 431-4000. Group rates are available.

``African Americans in the Coast Guard.'' This exhibit relates the role of African Americans in the long history of the U.S. Coast Guard. Of special interest to local residents is the role of the African Americans at the Cape Henry Life-Saving Station and the Life-Saving Station at Pea Island, N.C. The exhibit continues through March 2 at the Old Coast Guard Station.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Monday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $2.50 for adults, $2 for military and senior citizens and $1 for young people 6 to 18. The museum is at 24th Street and Atlantic Avenue. It is closed Mondays.
