The Virginian-Pilot headline ``Teachers want respect, not more work'' (Jan. 22) is inaccurate, inflammatory and feeds negative attitudes about Virginia Beach teachers. Those who attended the rally or watched the School Board meeting know that this headline could not be further from the truth. Not one speaker complained about working more days or adding more instructional time. To the contrary, many teachers agree there should be more time devoted to instruction.
No wonder there's great hostility toward teachers - what worker wouldn't like to be paid for 200 days while only working 190? The reality is that teachers have only been paid for 190. The issue now is: When they work 192 days, they expect to be paid for 192 days. This is a straightforward issue of respect and common sense, which could have been plainly stated for readers.
