AROUND THE ALBEMARLE, CONFERENCE RACES HEAT UP

Some tidbits and viewpoints from around the Albemarle:

In high school basketball, you never know who's going to win from one night to the next. A few games last week proved that. Currituck County opened the toughest part of its schedule with a loss to Plymouth. The Knights' next opponent was Southeast Halifax, ranked first in the state among 2A teams and fresh off a big win over Manteo. So what do the Knights do? They bounce back and knock off Southeast 67-55. The victory kept Currituck very much alive for a Northeastern Conference title.

The Knights' win also sets up some big games at the end of the season as Plymouth, Manteo, Southeast Halifax and Currituck battle for position:

Feb. 11: Plymouth at Currituck

Feb. 14: Southeast Halifax at Manteo

Feb. 18: Currituck at Manteo

Feb. 21: Currituck at Southeast Halifax.

In December, Perquimans County head basketball coach Luther Overton said that this year's Pirates squad would be his strongest ever. Now the Pirates are in danger of not even reaching the 1A playoffs. It's a huge drop considering the Albemarle Conference takes five of its seven teams to the post-season this year. A loss to Camden last week put Perquimans at 2 wins, 5 losses in the conference.

Some things never change. Camden County's girls basketball team is quietly atop the Albemarle Conference standings again. As of last week, there was just one glitch on the conference record: an upset loss to Weldon. Of course, Camden followed it with a 53-35 blowout over Perquimans.

Another small school girls team that has been making some waves is Albemarle School. The Lady Colts increased their conference record to 9-2 with a 48-24 win over Pungo Academy. The win nearly clinched the top seed going into the Tarheel Independent Conference Tournament, which starts Feb. 10.

After enduring a loss to Virginia Union last week, Elizabeth City State University's men's basketball team came back and pounded Bowie State 97-77 to keep ahold of first place in the CIAA Northern Division.
