With her hand pressed to her heart, Marybruce Dowd recited limericks she remembered from her youth. Rolling off her tongue as easily as soft butter on a warm biscuit came lively snippets about amoebas and insects. Then, in a flash, she metamorphasized into her old Aunt Delia, pontificating on the finer points of the English language: ``Marybruce, I am neither a creepy crawly insect nor an incorrect grammatical expression. If you can't bring yourself to call me Aunt Delia, just call me Delia.''
Dowd, a fourth generation Roanoke Island native, has a mind full of family lore that she hopes to knit together in book form. Her theatrical nature, observant mind and poetic soul are the stuff stage performances are made of.
The curtain will rise on Dowd and 12 other literary types on Feb. 15 when the Dare Writers Group presents its annual Literary Evening.
The loosely formed group - no bylaws, no dues - began meeting in 1991 to share their poetry, prose, excerpts from novels and nonfiction works. Members gather the last Thursday of the month at the Kill Devil Hills library to read and analyze the writings and offer encouragement.
``It's encouraging,'' Dowd said. ``People bring recent works they've done to share with the group or come as critics.''
Joining Dowd at the Feb. 15 reading are local amateur and professional writers, not all of whom are members of the Dare Writers Group. Participants include: Mary Talley, Brian MacDowell, Pat Eure, Edith Deltgen, Steve Lautermilch, Bob Speer, Nick Hodson, John Link, Jane Williams, Pat Garber and Michal Schliff.
