JAMES H. HACKLER

James Howard Hackler, 84, died Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, in Obici Hospital.

A retired heavy equipment operator for the Virginia Department of Transportation, Mr. Hackler was a native of Smith County, Va., and a member of Speedwell Baptist Church, Speedwell, Va. He was a lifetime deacon and member of Speedwell Ruritan Club, Mount Airy Masonic Lodge No. 0226 and started the Speedwell Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Marie Hackler; daughter and son-in-law, Patsy A. and Stanley O. King of Suffolk; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby D. and Jean M. Hackler of High Point, N.C.; sisters, Bonnie H. Hackler of Comers Rock, Va., and Dove H. Carrior of Independence, Va.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren. He was predeased by his parents, Vinnia Testament Hackler and Emmitte Hackler, and a daughter, Louise H. Melton.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Speedwell Baptist Church by the Rev. Richard Collins and Dr. Merle D. Correll with Masonic rites. Burial will be in Comers Rock Cemetery, Comers Rock. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday in Grubb Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va. Local arrangements were by Harrell Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1515, Suffolk, Va. 23439.
