Melvin D. Martin Sr. went to be with the Lord Feb. 8, 1997. He died in his home. See 2 Corinthians 5: 8-9 and Romans 8: 38-39.
A native of Rescue and a former resident of Newport News, Melvin was the son of the late Charlie and Eva Martin.
He is survived on this Earth by his beloved wife, Mary Byrd Martin; three sons, Melvin Martin Jr., David Martin of Smithfield and Steve Martin of Hampton; three stepsons, Lynard Smith of Baltimore, Md., Michael Smith of Newport News and Thomas Smith of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren; and two brothers, Charlie Martin of Richmond and Wayne Martin of Crittenden.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in River View Church, Rescue.
