Beef offerings include New York strip steaks, $3.99 a pound at Be-Lo; T-bone or portherhouse steaks, $3.48 a pound at Rack & Sack; and rib-eye steaks or roasts, $3.99 a pound at Harris Teeter. Farm Fresh has 5-ounce bacon-wrapped, beef tenderloin fillets for $2.99 each. Simply pick the cut you like best.
Lobsters are $6.49 a pound at Farmer Jack. Harris Teeter has salmon fillets for $6.99 a pound and 5- to 7-ounce lobster tails for $5.99. Farm-raised catfish fillets are $3.99 a pound at Hannaford's Virginia Beach location.
Produce specials include California lettuce, 47 cents a head, and baking potatoes, 17 cents a pound at Rack & Sack. Leaf lettuce is 89 cents a bunch at Harris Teeter. Fresh asparagus is $1.88 a pound at Farmer Jack.
Retail prices of olive oil have been higher over the last couple of years because of droughts in the Mediterranean region, where 98 percent of all olive oil is produced.
According to the North American Olive Oil Association, there is good news for 1997. Weather conditions have improved and produced a better crop. Lower prices will begin in late spring. ON THE SHELF
