Richard S. Baird, 73, died Feb. 8, 1997.
Born in Elizabeth, N.J., he was a retired captain of the U.S. Navy Supply Corps. He was a member of Kings Grant Presbyterian Church, Bayside Lions Club, Army-Navy Club, Army-Navy Country Club, Cypress Point Country Club, Scottish Society of Tidewater and was past president of Clan Baird Society. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and his decorations include the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service Medal. He attended the University of Michigan and was a graduate of the U.S. Navy Academy, Class of 1946. He also studied at the post-graduate school in Monterey, Calif., and the School of Naval Warfare at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. His final tour of duty was commanding officer of the Navy Finance Center, Cleveland, Ohio.
Survivors include his wife, Olive C. Baird; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Kings Grant Presbyterian Church by Dr. Brian Dill and the Rev. Allen Johnson. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Family will be at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. In addition to flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or charity of one's choice.
