Mordecai Waller Gayle III, 76, commissioner of revenue for York County from 1975-83, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997.
A native and lifelong resident of the Peninsula, he was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church, Seaford. He was a member of Peninsula Masonic Lodge No. 278 and Yorktown Masonic Lodge No. 205 and was due to receive his 50-year pin from the Yorktown Lodge in March. He was also a member of Order of Eastern Star York Chapter No. 110, where he served as a worthy patron from 1990-91.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Gayle; and a son, Mordecai Waller Gayle IV.
Eastern Star service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. The family will receive friends following the service there. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home by the Rev. Jack L. Hamilton. Burial with Masonic rites will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Newport News.
