OSCAR L. FITCHETT III

Oscar Leroy Fitchett III, 46, of the 5800 block of Clear Springs Road died Feb. 9, 1997, in Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital.

He was retired and a native of Richmond. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Harmony Village. He was an exceptional basketball player, No. 21, ``Sharp Shooter,'' and played opposite Bob Dandridge. He was also a fisherman.

Survivors include his wife, Mariah Turner Fitchett; a daughter and son-in-law, Toinetta Fitchett Adams and Derrick Adams of South Ozone Park, N.Y.; son, Spec. Erin O. Fitchett, U.S. Army, Fort Bragg, N.C.; parents, Sarah Fitchett and Oscar Fitchett Jr., both of Harmony Village; three sisters, Barbara Booker of Stafford, Va., Ruth Coleman of Baltimore and Zana Curtis of Ardmore, Pa.; grandmother, Estelle Fitchett Quarles; grandchildren, Shanyce Adams and Devonne Adams; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his daughter, Farrah Fitchett, who died 10 years ago.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in New Weeping Mary Baptist Church, 1104 Fentress Road, Chesapeake, by the Rev. John C. Smith, pastor. Burial will be in Rising Star Baptist Church Cemetery, Branchville. Oscar was a pet lover, loved kids and was a great brother-in-law. He was always cheerful, always joking, smiling and had the last word, loved his Caddy, loved his wife, and adored his kids and grandkids and family. Family and friends will assemble at 5876 Clear Springs Road, Virginia Beach, at 10 a.m. Friday for the funeral procession to the church. Metropolitan Funeral Service is in charge.
