Donations of old fishing tackle and gear are sought for the new sportfishing exhibit at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island.
``This part of the exhibit will give the flavor of an older fishing camp of years gone by,'' said Exhibit Curator Joe Malat. ``While its purpose is to house the fishing video that's part of the exhibit, its atmosphere should give visitors that `old time' feeling, and for that, we need a handful of authentic items that you would expect to see in an old fishing shack or fish camp.''
To accomplish this piece of fishing theater, Malat is requesting that members of the community sift through their fishing equipment for items that could lend atmosphere to the exhibit - and donate them to the aquarium. Among the artifacts Malat is seeking are old fishing tackle, rods, reels and lures; old duck or waterfowl decoys, old lanterns, an old tackle box, a landing net, scoop net, and fishing knife.
Other old fishing gear the aquarium is seeking includes waders, hip boots, a foul weather jacket, and old fishing hat.
``We're looking for things with personality and character, that say old Outer Banks fishing stuff,'' Malat said.
Malat said he also is seeking several fiberglass fish mounts in museum-quality condition for the sportfishing exhibit. Fish he's looking for include speckled trout, yellowfin tuna (less than 25 pounds), king mackerel (20-25 pounds), white perch and largemouth bass.
