Jessie Castillo joins other first-graders at St. Gregory's Catholic

Church in Virginia Beach in saying the Lord's Prayer at the

conclusion of Ash Wednesday services on Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is

the beginning of Lent, a solemn period of 40 days leading up to

Easter. In many churches, ashes are placed on a person's forehead as

a reminder that Adam, the first man, was made of dust and that man's

body will return to dust or ashes when he dies.
