Citing ``serious allegations of ethical misconduct,'' Sen. Jesse Helms called Friday for the withdrawal of the U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, Raymond Flynn, a former Democratic mayor of Boston.
Helms, R-N.C., chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, issued the appeal in a letter to Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
Flynn was reprimanded twice by former Secretary of State Warren Christopher - for what was considered inappropriate criticism of Republican domestic priorities and for permitting his campaign committee to pay his expenses as ambassador.
A State Department official involved in European affairs said he was unaware of the Helms letter and had no immediate comment.
