Scott A. Ziegler's Feb. 4 letter to the editor, ``A question of priorities,'' bemoans the fact that garbage collectors in New York City make more than most teachers in Virginia.
Is Mr. Ziegler aware that the cost of living in New York City is more than a little higher than Virginia? That refuse collectors in Norfolk start at less than half of what their New York counterparts make? That injury statistics show that refuse collection is consistently one of the top three most dangerous jobs in America?
Yes, there are many refuse collectors who are not qualified educationally to be teachers. On the other hand, many teachers do not possess the strength, stamina, training and determination necessary to be an effective garbage collector.
