Gertrude Cross, 84, of the 400 block of Bunche Blvd., died Feb. 13, 1997, in her residence.
Born in Gates, N.C., she was a homemaker and a member of Union Branch Baptist Church, Corapeake, participating as a member of the Independent Order of the J.R. Giddings & Jolifee Union Tent, Martha (NU)34 of Portsmouth and was also active in community services for senior citizens.
She leaves to cherish her memories a daughter, Adell Cross Watson of the home; a son, Charles Maurice Baker of Landover, Md.; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Dildy and Odell Odom, both of Gates, N.C.; a brother, Preston Wiggins of Brooklyn; a foster brother, James Savage; aunt, Lillian Squire of Roanoke Rapids; four grandchildren, Bridnetta Edwards, Donald Watson, Charlene Baker, Charles Baker Jr., all of Maryland; two great-grandchildren, Morgan Watson and Kelsey Edwards; son-in-law, Robert Watson; sister-in-law, Clemetine Williams; daughter-in-law, Rose Baker; two grandchildren-in-law, John Edwards and Yumeko Watson; two brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in New Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church, Corapeake, by the Dr. Rev. Clarence Cross Jr. Burial will be in the Cross Family Cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge. Public viewing will be held at Fisher Funeral Home, Portsmouth, from 1 to 3 p.m. today.
