VERNON L. BROWN

Vernon L. Brown, 82, passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 1997, at his residence.

Mr. Brown was a native of Randolph, Ill., and was a Peninsula resident for 50 years. For 47 years, he was associated with the Greyhound Bus Company. For 22 years he was manager of the Newport News bus terminal and area sales passenger agent. For 25 years he owned and operated the Fort Eustis bus terminal as a contract agent. He served in the Navy for four years during World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church, 12716 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, serving as a life deacon, assistant treasurer and church trustee. He was a member of the Collins Sunday school class. Mr. Brown was elected the first chairman of the Republican Party of Poquoson and served in the party until his death. Governor Allen appointed him to the Board of Transportation and Safety. He was an honorary alum of Mary Washington College.

Mr. Brown leaves his wife of 57 years, Irene Lundy Brown; two children, Robert R. Brown and wife Deborah Singley Brown of Poquoson and daughter, Brenda Brown Shipplett and husband Ronald P. Shipplett of Fairfax, Va.; three grandsons, Robert Jr., Brad and Craig Brown; and five brothers.

The remains will be placed in church Wednesday at 10 a.m., where friends may view until funeral services at 11 a.m., conducted by Dr. James E. White and Dr. William Tomlinson. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. Immediately following the services, family and friends are invited to return to church, Payne Hall, for lunch and to visit with the family. At other times the family will be at the home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Sanctuary Building Fund. Weymouth Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
