HAMPTON ROADS

CAROLINA BUILDERS PROMOTIONS: Carolina Builders Corp. promoted Marty Munson to area market manager and Robert Gentry to assistant manager. Both work at the building material supplier's Norfolk and Newport News locations.

NORFOLK

STRICKLAND & JAMES NAMES ASSOCIATES: Jennifer B. Jones and Tracey N. Lindsay were named associates at Strickland & Jones, P.C., Certified Public Accountants. Jones was formerly associated with the accounting firm of John E. Wecht Jr. and Lindsay was formerly with the accounting firm of Hamilton Dwyer & Company in Chesapeake.

WHEELER TO CONTINUE ROLE AT EVMS: Dr. Jock R. Wheeler, a vascular surgeon, will continue as dean and provost of Eastern Virginia Medical SchoolG3LS18 Lindsay for at least three more years. Wheeler has been dean and provost since 1994. Also, Dr. Arno L. Zaritsky, a member of the Eastern Virginia Medical School faculty for nearly five years, will serve as interim chairman of the department of pediatrics at the medical school. Dr. Raymond D. Adelman, professor and chairman of pediatrics at EVMS and senior vice president for academic affairs at the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, had resigned as chairman and will be taking a one-year sabbatical beginning July 1.

CHESAPEAKE

LAW FIRM NAMES MEMBER: D. Scott Seery was named a member of the law firm of Faggert & Frieden. He was formerly with the Norfolk law firm of McGuire, Woods, Battle and Boothe.

PORTSMOUTH

ENGINERING FIRM NAMES MARKETING DIRECTOR: Sheri Ann Spires was appointed marketing director for McPherson & Associates, Structural Engineers. She had been with the company for seven years and left to pursue other marketing opportunities with a Norfolk engineering/architectural firm .

VIRGINIA BEACH

MSA NAMES CONTROLLER: Laura M. Dietrich was named controller at MSA (Miller-Stephenson & Associates). She will be responsible for the financial operations of the consulting firm.

BARNETTS CHANGING LOCATION: Barnetts, the store specializing in lighting, gifts, shades and lamp repair, will move from Hilltop North Shopping Center to 1201 Laskin Road. The relocation will enable owners Martha Darden and Bunny Cutler to expand the store from its present 1,800 square feet to 2,900 square feet. The store will remain open during the move. The location is to be open the week of March 3.

VIRGINIA BEACH SPORTS CHANGING NAME: Virginia Beach Sports will become JumboSports, the name its owner has adopted. Tampa, Fla.-based Sports & Recreation Inc. said it decided to change its corporate moniker so its stores, which now operate under a variety of names, would have one identity. During the next several weeks, all 85 stores will get the JumboSports logo. The Virginia Beach store, located at Virginia Beach Boulevard and Witchduck Road, should get its new name by March 31, a spokeswoman said.

PENINSULA

REFERENCE BOOK HONORS HAMPTON LAWYER: Stephen M. Smith of the Hampton law firm Joseph Smith LTD. was named in the seventh edition (1997-1998) of The Best Lawyers in America in the specialty of personal injury. Only the top one percent of United States attorneys are honored with this recognition. The reference book is due out this month.

VIRGINIA

MEGA PLANS OUTLETS: MEGA Office Furniture said it's new Chesterfield County store is just one of up to 45 outlets planned for the mid-Atlantic region over the next five years. Company President Douglas H. McElhinney said the Richmond-based company will focus on small to medium-sized business customers. MEGA has stores in Chesapeake and Richmond. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
