MOTHER TERESA NOMINATED FOR NEW RUSHMORE

Martin Luther King Jr., Franklin Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Mother Teresa.

Those faces would be carved in stone if applicants to the College of William and Mary could design a Mount Rushmore to represent the 20th century.

The students, answering an essay question on the college's application, gave King, FDR, JFK and Mother Teresa the most votes.

Others mentioned as Mount Rushmore candidates included Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Mohandas Gandhi, Ronald Reagan, George Bush and Bill Clinton.

The visages of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt now gaze from Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

William and Mary received 7,135 applications by Jan. 15.

King received 72 votes, Franklin Roosevelt 45, Kennedy 24 and Mother Theresa Teresa 20.

The results suggest that students' conception of leadership is changing, school spokesman Bill Walker said.

``That is, no longer do they conceive of leaders only as . . . people who are appointed or elected to leadership positions,'' Walker said. ``Two of the four are sort of informal leaders who have transformed groups of people, even humanity, you might say.''
