Goalie Marc Seliger, who celebrated his return from several months of back problems with two recent victories for the Hampton Roads Admirals, was recalled by the Washington Capitals on Monday and assigned to AHL affiliate Portland. He is expected to be gone at least two weeks.
Seliger has a 9-3-1 record and a goals-against average of 3.73 in 15 games this season. Just last week, coach John Brophy had committed to using Seliger and Darryl Paquette on a rotating basis.
To replace Seliger, the Admirals added emergency backup John Mewhort to the roster. Mewhort, who plays amateur adult hockey, occasionally has practiced and served as emergency backup goalie with the Admirals this season. He also served as Toledo's emergency backup goalie when the Storm were in Norfolk to play Hampton Roads on Feb. 5. Left wing Rod Taylor, the Admirals' third-leading scorer, is the Admirals' third goalie.
Meanwhile, forward Ryan Mulhern has been nominated for AHL player of the week. Mulhern, called up to Portland two weeks ago, scored a hat trick for the Pirates Saturday night.
